Short film YALA in a nutshell
First came the idea for me to dance in a dress on Vrijthof square in Maastricht on broad daylight. I wanted to challenge both myself and conformity. To reach more people than just the life bystanders I decided to film it. Somehow the idea to do it on three locations haunted me: Vrijthof, heuvelland (region in south-Limburg) and underwater.

Not everyone was going to relate to wanting to dance (in a dress). To find different perspectives I interviewed people through Zoom about how conformity had manifested in their lives. While preparing the interviews I remembered a theory I once heard that every single person has three different versions of their own identity.
-
Public
On the street, in the supermarket, surrounded by strangers. You do not control who is around you.
-
Private
At home, at your friends' or family, your sports club or a wedding. You choose where you go and have more control over who you surround yourself with. The setting allows for a different self-expression, engagement and intimacy.
-
Internal
Everything that nobody knows unless we decide to make it known: thoughts, feelings, desires, dreams, memories or future plans.

Vrijthof, heuvelland and underwater represent these three versions of our identity, which adapts dependent on environment and circumstances. The essence of conformity. The dance and interviews melted into one linear story that was narrated by myself.
My research is available for inspection in my thesis Glow-uptivism.

I investigated 'empowerment' through art and social sciences.
